Write to us
A letter, answered.
Write to contact@epistle.email from any address. Tell us your Epistle address, your phone (iPhone or Android) and what happened. We usually reply within a working day.
Getting started
Your own address in a minute.
Sign up in the app (“No account – sign up” under the sign-in card). Pick a name, a password of at least 10 characters, and, if you like, a recovery email.
Sign in with the same address and password in the app on every phone, and on the web in the webmail. Your letters, folders and encryption keys are the same everywhere.
Encryption is set up for you the first time you sign in. The 3 easy steps are the whole tutorial.
Forgotten password
Getting back in.
We never know your password, so we can’t tell you what it was. We can set a new one for you:
- Write to contact@epistle.email from the recovery email you gave at sign-up, and say which Epistle address it is.
- We check it matches, set a temporary password and send it to that recovery email.
- Sign in with it, then choose your own in Settings › Security and privacy › Change password.
No recovery email? We’ll ask a few questions only the owner could answer, but we can’t promise to get you back in.
Encrypted letters stay sealed with your old key after a reset. If you remember the old password later, type it once under Settings › Encryption › Reactivate and they open again.
An address made for you by your organisation? Ask your administrator: they can reset it straight away.
Deleting your account
In the app, in four taps.
- In the app, tap your picture at the top right of the inbox to open Settings.
- Scroll to the bottom: Account › Delete account.
- Type your password, and your address to confirm.
- Tap Delete my account. Your address and every letter in it are deleted for good, on every phone and in the webmail.
If it says “This account is managed by your administrator”, the address belongs to an organisation (a church, a school, a business on its own domain). Your administrator removes it. What happens to your data is in the privacy policy.
Questions
The ones people actually ask.
I don’t get notifications for new mail.
Check Settings › Notifications › New mail notifications in Epistle, then your phone’s own settings for Epistle (notifications allowed, not in Focus or quiet hours). Signing out and in again registers the phone afresh.
I lost the phone with my authenticator app.
Use another authenticator app you added under Settings › Security and privacy › Two-step sign-in, if you have one. If not, write to us from your recovery email (or ask your administrator) and we’ll turn two-step sign-in off so you can set it up again.
A phone was lost or stolen.
On another device, open Settings › Security and privacy › Signed-in devices and sign that phone out, or use Sign out everywhere. Then change your password.
Can I use Epistle in another mail app?
Not at the moment: use the Epistle app or the webmail. That’s what keeps your password off the server.
Pictures in a letter don’t show.
Epistle asks before loading pictures from the internet, because senders use them to see when you open their letter. Tap Show on the letter, or change it under Settings › Security and privacy › Remote images.
Does Epistle cost anything?
No. There are no adverts and nothing to buy. If it’s a blessing to you, see Technology for how to help keep the lamp lit.
